Copado Explorer

Exploratory Testing for Salesforce

Product Designer
2023-2024

In this case study, we focus on building a solution to enhance manual testing practices within Salesforce DevOps, aiming for greater efficiency. Our goal was to design a manual testing solution that integrates seamlessly with Copado's CI/CD Salesforce solution, while also transitioning testers towards automation leveraging AI to help improve quality.

Copado is the #1 Native DevOps Platform for Salesforce and the Market Leader in Low-Code CI/CD and AI-Driven Test Automation for Enterprise Clouds. Backed by Salesforce Ventures and Insight Venture Partners, Copado powers end-to-end digital transformation for 1,200+ global enterprises like Coca-Cola, Ebay, Medtronic and Volkswagen.

Early 2023

Engineering-led initiative and PoC

Our journey began with a critical realization: the absence of a robust exploratory testing solution in the market. Exploratory testing, a staple activity in QA teams, typically involves manual processes and disjointed tool usage.

To address this gap, our lead engineer delivered a Proof of Concept (PoC) to assess the feasibility of integrating exploratory testing capabilities into our existing technology.

Collaborating closely with the rest of the design team, we meticulously reviewed and analyzed the PoC. Together, we shaped the solution's architecture to ensure it could accommodate all potential requirements effectively.

Mid 2023

Internal Research and Market Positioning

Our company has a CI/CD solution built into Salesforce. The integration process of the test automation tool and the CI/CD solution revealed a lack of maturity and knowledge about automation testing among Salesforce testers. This gap was addressed with our Proof of Concept (PoC), making both exploratory and manual testing easier and more integrated.

Late 2023

Design Team took over. Creation of cross-products flow

From a product strategy standpoint, we needed to transition the Proof of Concept (PoC) into a seamless experience between the SF-based solution and the Explorer solution.

We created screens with our own design system, while also considering the Salesforce Lightning Design System (SLDS). The challenge was to map concepts between two different platforms and systems to create a seamless experience.

Late 2023

Defining MVP

The design team and product management collaborate to set priorities and features for the upcoming beta version.

We prioritized simpler features and omitted advanced ones related to test automation. This approach suits our final user persona, business testers, who are unable to code a test script.

Throughout the development, we maintained constant communication with engineers, adapting the design to accommodate the varying nature of the integrated parts.

Early 2024

Launch and AI upgrades

Copado Explorer's launch has stirred significant interest, particularly within the Salesforce Ecosystem. Excitement is building, and early indicators look promising.

>250% YoY consumption growth in Feb 2024

The crafted experience will shape the upcoming features for improved recording capabilities and test creation. Moving towards the vision of autonomous testing.

An AI-based copilot helps users to refine the test helping them applying best practices and suggest improvements. From a prompt-based interaction we aim to introduce proactive AI, creating an hybrid between command-based and intent-based UI.
